Rule Question of the Week 1

Runner 2nd Base, Batter schlägt ein Double, R2 scort aber berührt die 3rd Base nicht. Der Ball wird zum Pitcher geworfen, welcher auf den Rubber steigt und in Berührung mit diesem zu einem Appeal auf die (unbesetzte) 3rd Base wirft.

That’s a balk?

    Richtige Antwort:

    Nein! Obwohl der Pitcher zu einer unbesetzten Base wirft, macht er dies “for the purpose of making a play”. Ein Appeal ist zwar definitionsgemäß kein Play (um Multiple Appeals zu ermöglichen), aber in diesem Fall wird der Appeal als legitimer Versuch gewertet, ein Out zu erzielen.

    (d) The pitcher, while touching his plate, throws, or feints a throw to an unoccupied base, except for the purpose of making a play;

    PBUC UM (2011)
    8.7 …It is NOT a balk for the pitcher, while in contact with the rubber, to throw to an unoccupied base IF it is for the purpose of making an appeal play. (Note that the pitcher does not have to step back off the rubber to make an appeal play.)
